An Absurdist Screenplay About my eating disorder

Logline

From her room at an impatient treatment center, film-obsessed teenager attempts to breakdown the Internal Family System of her eating disorder in the form of a semi-animated comedy screenplay.

Synopsis

17- year-old McKenna’s life has never been worse. She’s a senior in high school, she’s gained 20 pounds, and she can’t for the life of her figure out how to throw up.

When McKenna’s psychologist Susan decides to pursue Internal Family Systems therapy with her, McKenna envisions animated representations of the parts of her disorder: the evil Binge Monster vs superhero Captain Restriction.

As McKenna’s relationship to food worsens, Binge Monster and Captain Restriction grow stronger. McKenna gets sucked out of reality and into her animated world, destroying her relationship with best friend Teddy. As she fights to get control of her disorder, McKenna realizes that the war in her head may not be as clear cut as she initially imagined, and is definitely more dangerous.

Six months later, Teddy visits McKenna in her rehab center where McKenna explains that she’s in the process of writing her complicated relationship with the components of her disorder into an absurdist screenplay.

Theme and Tone

An Absurdist Screenplay about my Eating Disorder is a dark, coming-of-age meta-comedy that highlights the complex coping mechanisms that come with an eating disorder. It explores the polarity of Binge Eating Disorder, a disease that at first glance may appear cut and dry, but in reality is deeply nuanced.
